Giant Robot is proud to present Post-It Show 6 at Giant Robot 2.

Curated by artists Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson in conjunction with Giant Robot, the show is slated to feature roughly 2,000 works by noted contributors for only $20. These pieces will be on standard-sized 3" x 3" Post-It notes. (Larger sizes of 4" x 4" and 6" x 6" will cost a bit more.) The pieces will be cash-and-carry, making it a great chance to find one-of-a-kind yet affordable holiday gifts.

Alisa Yang & Ching Ching Cheng: Coloring – Flavors of Childhood
Opening Reception: Friday December 10th 7-10pm

Exhibition: December 8, 2010 – January 30, 2011

Scoops is pleased to present Coloring - Flavors of Childhood, featuring new works on paper by Alisa Yang and Ching Ching Cheng. Using old books as a medium, they explore the inner and outer landscape of their childhood. Alisa Yang collages with children’s coloring books, re-arranging torn and cut-out images to create a new narrative context. Ching Ching Cheng paints her personal experiences on torn pages, coloring her intimate memories with the juxtaposition of text from old books.

Alisa Yang disobeyed her parents and became an artist, graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in 2009 and now lives and works in Los Angeles. She also makes comics and zines under the name Sammy Sundae. More work can be seen at www.alisayang.com.

Ching Ching Cheng currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She graduated from Art Center College of Design and currently has work in the Rental and Sales Gallery at LACMA. In 2010 exhibitions included a four person show at Gallery 825, the Korean Cultural Center, AHUSA UCLA, and the art fair in Carrousel Du Louvre. Found out about Park[ing] Day LA yesterday - "Their goal was to reprogram the urban surface by reclaiming streets for people to rest, relax and play and their mission is to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play."

Me and two friends, Ching Ching Chen, Jennifer Cuellar, decided to do a last minute park in Silverlake today and hang out at our garden where chalk flower grows.

I had to start over on a piece I've been working on for the last two months, it was a hard decision *Sob* but I just wasn't happy with it. You do what you gotta do! I'm sad it won't be done for the show, since this is really a last minute show I will try to do as much as I can.

ICON6, Glendale Open Studio, and some thoughts

Art Exhibition at Glendale Brand Library, July 17th - August 13th, 2010
Open Studio Tour, Saturday, July 24, 2010 12 - 6 pm

I have a piece in the Brand library at Glendale, and will be participating in the Glendale Open Studio Tour, I will be representing circa art group as a guest artist in Verdugo Park. Stop by if you're going!

I attended ICON6 last week, although it was more that I can afford right now but it was worth it! There were some amazing speakers, Wayne White was my favorite, who knew he's a great banjo player too? and Jason Holley did a series of hilarious animation - true tales of interactions between Illustrator & art director. Met some nice people and made a few new friends, it's good to know that you aren't the only one struggling to make a living doing art.

Still learning how to network and do small talks since I'm a shy introvert, but I've gotten a lot better, and attending events such as these are good experiences to learn from. Anyways, I will try not to be such a hermit and go to openings and such a lot more, and you should too!

My goal is to be a successful and self sustainable artist doing fine art, illustration, and comics. Why can't I swing both ways and do a Ménage à trois? I've been told many times that these 3 are very separate world (well not so separate with Illustration and comics) and my different styles only makes it harder for me to get recognition in any of these fields. Whatever, I'm stubborn and I don't subscribe to labels, I'm used to being the outsider. I will continue to do what I love, continue to be myself in my art, wither or not I make bank to eat at $$$$ restaurants does not concern me. I'll just learn how to make the food at $$$$ restaurants myself so HA!

I was watching the Next Iron Chef Asian fast food challenge episode when I notice a little blooper. They mixed up the Korean and Vietnamese when they were listing the Asian restaurants in LA, this particular challenge was for the chefs to taste the different Asian food and then try to make the food they were eating. I thought this was pretty funny and worthy of sharing.

APE alternative press expo 2009

My good friend, Mike Rios, was generous enough to share his table with me at APE (alternative press expo) this year! It was our first time, we had fun meeting people and looking at some creative zines. I will be more prepared next year, I am excited to work on a few zines, I'll also find a cheaper printer/binder for my couch tomato comic book.

Mike went all out, offering free tote bag with goodies and free photo sticker with his mascot "clammy". I can definitely learn from his marketing skills and salesmanship.

Highlight of APE was meeting Phoebe Gloeckner and Marc Bell! Both of whom I admire and adore. They were very nice and down to earth, I'm in love them even more now. Marc Bell drew a bacon hat (how did he know I LOVE bacon?) in his new "Hot Potatoe" book, which is a freaking awesome book. I get pretty nervous and awkward in social situations, being shy and introverted can be a disadvantage in this business. It was encouraging to see that even my comic heroes can feel that way too sometimes.

This cute little boy was staring at clammy's giant penis the whole time haha.

Can you tell I'm blushing? I told her that I have the biggest crush on her, which I do, she is one of the top 3 female artists who inspires me. I wish this wasn't blurry though.

New York Puppies

New York was a blast! I love the museums, the subways, and street carts, there's all sorts of happenings to check out even if you're broke. I noticed that there are many cute puppies and pretty ladies in dresses, I opt to take photos of puppies instead since the net is flooeded with pictures of beautiful women already.

The fairy tails of sammy sundae

This piece is a part of a series based of the original story of the little red riding hood by Perrault, He wrote it as a cautionary tale for adults, just like all the fairy tales that has now been adapted for children. In the original story the wolf had sex with the little red riding hood and it was implied that he raped her.

My version of the story is a sequel to that, shame grew in the belly of little red riding hood and Sammy Sundae was born. Sammy Sundae had a tail that reminded her mother of what had happened, she became increasingly paranoid and detest that part of Sammy so much that she abandoned her at her grandmother's place. Her grandmother treated her as a burden and as a sin staining her god-fearing house. Sammy got tired of arcane rules and ran away from home.

She no longer remains a victim who yearns to be save like her mother(like all the fairy tales), she decides to save herself and live on her own in the forest where good and evil intermingle. Sammy is also no longer ashamed of her tail, accepting herself entirely is essential to the story. She has a pair of scissors which she cuts the tails off of wolves and foxes, a symbol of what makes one sin, rehabilitating these once violent and evil wolves to morally righteous one. In a perfect fairy tale world that is, where right and wrong is black and white.

The symbols and metaphors in the story is very personal to me, as a female trying to break the stereotypes laid out by our culture of gender. I don't think I need to write a 10 page paper here go into the details but you get the idea. I have done a coloring book that narrates Sammy Sundae's story and I hope to make more coloring book collages to complete her world. I choose coloring books from the 40s-50s not only because I like the style of the era but it was also an era of strict misogynistic moral codes that set the stage for feminist movement in the 60's. I did not draw any of the black lines in my collages, strictly using found coloring books, rearranging them as I have rearrange the fairy tale to compose an image that is more fitting for our current society. It is important to me that the act of tearing up old coloring books, tearing up the images of stereotypical characters, is parallel to deconstructing history for a revisionist herstory.

The crayon scissors are also made for Sammy Sundae, and the room installation in previous posts.

Below are the collections of tails of Sammy Sundae. They are also numbered in a way that they all add up to 14, for example: 1616, 1+6+1+6=14. You can't see them in the pictures because they are paper cut out numbers painted with the same color of the background.

I took some pictures before it got crowded at the grad show. I don't know why the pictures looks so gray and desaturated when I upload it to blogger? If anybody knows why let me know...
It was a fun night, even though I had less than 24 hours to put it up I think everything turned out alright. I should of post up a sign "DO NOT TOUCH" since people kept breaking my crayon scissors and even stole a few. Two of my couch tomato comics were stolen too!!!

Bear Minimum was jaming on the casio bobbing his head all night, it was fun to see people's reaction to him - some got scared, some laughed, some thought it was a robot, and others posed with him for a picture. At the end of the night he made $7.25 in his 7-11 big gulp cup !!!

Every time I go to an Asian restaurant or store they ask me in their native language if I am whatever they are. I've gotten pretty much everything below, either I have one of those universal Asian faces or we can't tell who's what either. By the way, I am a Taiwanese American!
